The Real Story Behind Where Weave Comes From (Baruwk37)

If you wear hair extensions, chances are you’re pretty picky about what type of hair you wear. You know if you prefer Remy or non-Remy hair, Indian or Brazilian, synthetic or human. You may also believe you can simply look at hair extension packaging to find out its origins. But the truth is, it’s pretty difficult to tell where your hair extensions come from, and there are plenty of manufacturers who are deliberately misleading about where they source their hair from.

Riqua Hailes, owner of Just Extensions hair extension bar in Los Angeles and The Weave Express in Washington, D.C., knows this firsthand. After noticing inconsistencies in the hair extensions she received from vendors, Hailes decided to dig deeper. She embarked on a journey through China, Cambodia, Malaysia and India and will continue her travels to Brazil and Russia later this year to uncover the long, storied journey hair extensions take before they reach a salon or retail store. Here is her account

Separating Fact From Fiction In China

“I started my journey in March 2014. My first stop was China, the largest exporter of human hair in the world. China can reproduce almost anything — and hair is no exception. Chinese hair is often considered cheap in the extensions industry because it isn’t donated hair, so in order to be on the same playing field as other exporters, they will market it as Brazilian or Malaysian hair, which can go for twice the money.

“China imports fallen hair, also referred to as non-Remy hair, from India. Fallen hair is dead hair that naturally sheds and is collected from hair salons and hairbrushes. Because the hair’s quality has been jeopardized and matting is likely to occur, non-Remy hair is less desirable in the extensions industry. But China collects this hair, cleans it and mislabels it as being from a higher-quality hair extension source like Brazil, Russia or India.

“If you’re shopping for extensions, and they say they’re shipped from China, it’s probably Chinese hair masquerading as something else. One hair distributor taught me to pay attention to the smell: Fallen hair has a smell of acid and silicone that’s easily recognizable.”

Selling for Survival in Cambodia

“Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is dusty, developing and rife with suffering, yet culturally rich and bustling. In this desperately poor country, women sell their bodies, their hair and sometimes their daughters to put food on the table. Even my hotel was a reminder of the desperate circumstances here, with a sign that read, ‘Please do not participate in the sex trade.’ One Cambodian woman told me, ‘I’ll sell my hair before my body to feed my family. My hair grows back.’

“About 45 miles outside the city, I visited a village where women cut hair to be sold as extensions. There were about 80 families with little to no food, clothes or electricity. I saw only one man, and when I asked him to show me his wife, he responded by pointing to a group of women. Women between the ages of 18 and 60 lined up to sell their hair (the women made it very clear they don’t cut the young girls’ hair), receiving 20,000 to 33,000 riel (about $5 to $8) in exchange. Every four to six months, a collector comes to the village to purchase the hair.

“One woman with a short bob cut came up to me said through my translator, ‘I don’t feel pretty with short hair.’ I took off my hat and showed her my short hair. I said through the translator, ‘You’re certainly one of the most beautiful women I’ve met.’

“I left Cambodia with a mix of emotions, finding comfort in having a business that offers these women help but sad for the poverty they experience.”image

A Fruitless Search in Malaysia

“Malaysian hair is highly advertised by other hair extensions companies, and many of my clients request this hair over others, so I was eager to source the hair directly from Malaysia for my own extensions line. (That’s me in the photo on the right.) What I found in Malaysia was simply the plot behind one large marketing ploy.

“Upon arrival in Malaysia, it was difficult finding women who would speak to me. The majority of Malaysians are Muslim, so women would not speak to me without first asking permission from their husbands. In addition to that frustration, I couldn’t seem to locate any villages or factories selling or cutting hair. I searched the city as well as the countryside with no luck.

”The hair extension industry isn’t regulated, so vendors can label and market hair as they like. After speaking to several hairstylists in Malaysia, I learned that ‘Malaysian hair extensions’ don’t truly exist. Hair labeled ‘Malaysian’ is typically purchased directly from China — buyers beware.”

India & Holy Rituals

“Many Chinese-made hair extensions are falsely marketed as Indian hair. Indian hair, with its thick, dark, slightly wavy texture, is very popular in the hair extension industry. In addition to the luxurious texture, Indian hair is plentiful: Hindu Indians cut their hair as part of a ritual sacrifice to God. In a country of more than a billion people willing to sacrifice their hair for blessing, there’s never a shortage.

“Every day, thousands of pilgrims visit community temples throughout India, waiting in lines for hours to donate their hair. Women, men and children of all ages shave their heads as a symbol of washing away one’s past and starting anew. Hindus believe if they sacrifice their hair to the gods — some do it yearly and others do it just once — their prayers will be answered.

“Temples hold private auctions to sell the hair to vendors. They use the profits to fund community projects like housing, education and health care. India’s poverty level, much like Cambodia’s, is overwhelming and heartbreaking to witness, but I couldn’t find a single person who said she would cut her hair for personal profit.”

Next Stops

“This journey has confirmed my belief that a good business is based on relationships. Without traveling to these countries, there is no way I would be as knowledgeable about the industry. It has certainly changed the way I approach my relationships with vendors internationally.”

Racism Is Still In Affect

The Harsh Reality Of Modern Day Racism

From the 1800s to this very day, racism is still in affect, the only problem is there are multitudes of people here in America that hates to acknowledge it,  even though it’s smack dab in there faces. Some people actually want to believe racism is done away with like it’s nothing but an old story on a movie screen or inside of a history book. Maybe people fill like this because Deception, is a big part of racism today which is a big problem because it is very difficult to identify who is and who isn’t anti black.

At least back in time you new exactly who despised you because of your skin color, today people have know clue and very rarely come across people that are openly racist. But that doesn’t mean racism is over, yes there are allot of white people that are not racist, and yes we are doing better than chattel slavery and legal segregation. But how does that benefit us when young black boys and girls like Renisha McBride, Trayvon Martin or Aiyana Stanley-Jones are being murdered one after another.

And the list goes on Jordan Davis, Rekia Boyd, Jonathan Ferrell, Mike Brown and millions of other black boys, girls, women and men who have been killed by the hands of white police officers. Black men and women are being targeted and treated like common criminals do to the new stop-and-frisk law. So lets be honest, we are fooling ourselves if we think we have achieved racial equality or eliminated racial prejudice, Americas court systems don’t even acknowledge the Black Race as equals to the white race.

Racism Inside The Court System

Marissa stand your groundMarissa Alexander of Jacksonville Florida fired warning shots against her abusive husband, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Alexander’s attorney said she was clearly defending herself and should not have to spend the next two decades behind bars. Even her husband Rico Gray told prosecutors in the deposition that Alexander came back into the house holding the weapon and told him to leave. He refused Gray said “she shot in the air one time,” telling him and his children to leave.

Marissa Alexander did not kill or harm anyone, she was in fear for her own life do to a pattern of  abusive altercations with her husband Rico Gray whom she had already taken out a protective order on. In August 2011, a judge rejected a motion by Alexander’s attorney to grant her immunity under the “Stand your Ground” law. But yet George Zimmerman murders an unarmed teenage black male who was minding his on business, and was granted immunity under the “Stand your Ground” law, Trayvon Martin was just defending his self.

The Harsh Reality Of Modern Day Racism & historical racism is white supremacy, the belief that white people are superior to people of other racial backgrounds. And as long as they believe this and teach there youth to believe the same, whites will never look at the Black Race or any other race as equals. In fact most white supremacists identify various racial and cultural groups as their primary enemy, which explains exactly why societal racism in America only privileges the white race over all other races.
